Deadly LA Fires Expose Climate Threats and Urban Risk, Feed Insurance Crisis

“Hydroclimate whiplash” is the new metric UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain coined to measure the “sudden, large, and frequent transitions between very dry and very wet conditions” now occurring with ever greater frequency across the world. The dangers became apparent last week in California, when “very dry” coincided with hurricane-force Santa Ana winds.
