Norway might be getting a nuclear power boost! A company called Norsk Kjernekraft, which is all about developing nuclear projects, just teamed up with a Nordic consulting firm, Norconsult. They’ve signed a letter of intent, basically saying they’re going to work together to push for nuclear power development in Norway. They hinted that this could actually lead to some real, concrete projects down the line.
Norsk Kjernekraft’s big idea is to build, own, and run small modular reactor (SMR) power plants in Norway, specifically for industries that use a lot of power. They’re planning to follow all the rules and regulations, both national and international, and they’re even using the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Milestones approach to make sure everything is done right. They’re focusing on what’s important in the early stages, and they’ll be working with some serious financial players to get the funding they need.
Norconsult, based in Sandvika, Norway, is a big deal in the consulting engineering world in the Nordics. So, having them on board is a major plus for Norsk Kjernekraft.
Norsk Kjernekraft has already been talking with several municipalities about the possibility of building nuclear power plants. Halden, in southeastern Norway, is the fourth potential location they’ve announced. Last August, they even sent a proposal to the Ministry of Energy to assess building a multi-SMR plant in Øygarden, which is west of Bergen. Before that, they’d already submitted proposals for SMR plants in Aure, Heim, and Vardø.
